Sono divisi in DVD-R che una volta scritto, diventa di sola lettura; e poi ci sono i DVD-RW , cioè che sono riscrivibili.
C'è anche un Disco magneto-ottico di nome MOD (Magneto Optical Disk) o solo MO e vengono letti magniticamente, ma scritti con un laser. Questi sfiorano la memoria di 1 Tb.
